With 15,388 new cases, daily Covid-19 infections in India decline slightly

India recorded 15,388 new cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the past 24 hours, according to updates from the Union Ministry of Health on Tuesday. This brought the national total to 11,244,786.

The number of active cases, which has peaked in recent weeks, has fallen from 1,285 to 1,87,462. Active cases have fallen after increasing for six consecutive days.

The country also recorded 77 new deaths, which brought the death toll to 1,57,930, according to the statement from the Ministry of Health.

India has seen an increase in daily workload due to a peak in a few states. Six states – Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu – account for 86.25% of new coronavirus cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

While Maharashtra accounted for 59.90% of the total new cases on Monday, Kerala’s workload contributed 11.29% to the tally of new infections.

The Center holds regular high-level review meetings with States and Union territories, showing an increase in the number of new cases daily, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan holding meetings of weekly reviews.

The nationwide vaccination campaign, launched on January 16, has so far managed to inoculate 2.26 crore with 16.96,588 vaccines administered through Monday evening. A total of 2,26,85,598 doses of vaccine have been administered in the country in 52 days since the launch of the vaccination campaign.

India’s Covid-19 tally crossed 20 lakh on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16; it exceeded 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and crossed the bar of one crore on December 19.
