London: India’s Sania Mirza and Bethany Matte got off to a winning start in the women’s doubles at Wimbledon. Sania, who is coming to Wimbledon for the first time since 2017, will be competing with American Bethany Mattek. In the first round, Sania and Matek defeated sixth seed Alex Guevarachi-Desire Cross in straight sets. The score was 7-5, 6-3.

In the second round, Sania will face the winner of the Anastasia Pavlochungova-Elena Rybakina and Veronica Kudermetova-Elena Vesnina fights. With just days to go before the Olympics, Sania’s form at Wimbledon is crucial for India.

Sania competes in doubles at the Olympics with Ankita Raina. Ankita also competes in Wimbledon with American Lauren Davis in the women’s doubles. Sania, who left the field after becoming a mother in 2018, won the Hobart International WTA Tournament in January last year.
