Live updates from the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election: Assembly seats on Saturday’s battlefield are split between Alipurduar and Cooch Behar in North Bengal and Howrah, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas and parts of Kolkata in South Bengal.

UPDATE APR 10, 2021, 10:24 am IST

Voting for the fourth phase of the eight-phase Assembly election in West Bengal begins as 44 assembly seats, including some high-level, go to the polls. Assembly seats on the battlefield on Saturday are split between Alipurduar and Cooch Behar in North Bengal and Howrah, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas and parts of Kolkata in South Bengal.

The territory of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from which she won in 2016, Bhabanipur, also goes to the elections today. Union Home Secretary Amit Shah campaigned door-to-door in the constituency on Friday ahead of phase four. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has aligned actor-turned-politician Rudrnail Ghosh in Bhabanipur against veteran Congress leader Trinamool (TMC) Sovandeb Chatterjee. The chief minister has contested this year since Nandigram against his former colleague, now major opponent Suvendhu Adhikari.

Tollygunge is another high-profile constituency, where Union Minister Babul Supriyo is the BJP candidate against TMC MP Aroop Biswas.

In 2016, the TMC won 39 out of 44 constituencies, while it came out victorious in only 25 of them in 2019 if the Lok Sabha election results are distributed at the assembly seat level, according to data presented by the Hindustan Times.

The temperature is already high in the state as the electoral commission served two opinions on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for violating the model code of conduct.

West Bengal will vote again a week later, on April 17, for the fifth phase. The counting of the votes will take place on May 2.
