Prince William defended the British royal family on Thursday after his younger brother Harry and his wife Meghan accused them of racism in a bombshell interview watched around the world.
“We are really not a racist family,” William told reporters during a visit to a multiracial school in an underprivileged area of east London.
The Duke of Cambridge, son of heir to the throne, Prince Charles, added that he had not yet spoken to Harry in California since the interview first aired in the United States on Sunday.
“No, I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will,” he said.
A long-awaited statement from Queen Elizabeth II released on Tuesday was conciliatory to her grandson and his Métis wife, after their meeting with the host of the American talk show Oprah Winfrey.
But he also stressed that “some memories may vary”, with Buckingham Palace vowing to examine the couple’s claim that an unidentified royal asked how dark the skin of their unborn son Archie would be.
Charles has yet to comment on the controversy but was filmed on Tuesday visiting a Nigerian Christian church in London whose pastors are promoting a campaign to vaccinate more blacks against the coronavirus.
In the interview, Harry also said his father and brother were “trapped” in a hidden institution.
