Toyota Urban Cruiser recalled for defective airbag: Maruti Brezza not affected

Toyota India has announced the recall of the Urban Cruiser less than 4m compact SUV. The manufacturer has recalled up to 9,498 Urban Cruiser units due to a faulty driver’s side airbag module. Toyota did not disclose details of the exact problem that prompted the recall. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, on which the Urban Cruiser is based, remains unchanged.

The affected cars were manufactured between July 28, 2020 and February 11, 2021, according to details released by Toyota. The official statement says the manufacturer has come to find a possible problem with the driver’s side airbag module assembly. The company has decided to recall the vehicles for the replacement of the part concerned, free of charge. Toyota did not specify what problems customers may have with the defective part.

The owner of the affected vehicles will be contacted by authorized Toyota dealers across the country. There will be a free inspection and the airbag will be replaced free of charge by the dealer. Customers with affected vehicles can contact the nearest dealership or call the Toyota Customer Care Center at 1-800-425,0001.

The Urban Cruiser is essentially a redesigned version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. It is one of the Japanese automaker’s best-selling cars and Toyota also offers a longer warranty period on the Urban Cruiser compared to what Maruti Suzuki provides for the Vitara Brezza.

Although the styling is different, the mechanics used by the Toyota Urban Cruiser are borrowed from the Maruti Vitara Brezza without any changes. The compact SUV will offer a mild hybrid gasoline engine setup and the choice between a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The engine is a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter-4-cylinder K-series unit with 104 PS peak power and 138 Nm peak torque. The mild hybrid of the Suzuki Hybrid Vehicle System (SHVS) will assist the engine during strong acceleration, improving handling and lowering the load on the alternator. The SHVS will also offer brake energy regeneration and an idle stop system.

Although there is no difference between the Baleno and the Glanza, the Vitara Brezza and the Urban Cruiser have many differences. The new Urban Cruiser receives a different grille from that of the Vitara Brezza. The two-slat grille is extremely distinct and is heavily inspired by the Toyota Fortuner. It receives two LED headlights just like the Vitara Brezza and the units remain the same. It also receives a set of different bumpers and skid plates.

The side profile of the two vehicles remains very similar. The Urban Cross gets different alloy rims. The rear also remains almost the same, except for the bumper, which is different in the two vehicles. Much like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the Urban Cruiser has a dashboard, steering wheel, dashboard, infotainment system and even identical seats. The only difference between the two is in the colors. The Toyota offers a walnut-brown cabin unlike the all-black option of the Vitara Brezza.
