Siachen Hero Colonel Narendra Kumar has passed away

Colonel Narendra Kumar, one of the first Indian soldiers to set foot in the Siachen Mountains, has died. He died at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi on Thursday. He was 87 years old.

Colonel Narendra Kumar played a key role in Operation Meghdoot in 1984, which protected Siachen from Pakistani aggression. The Indian Army planned the operation based on the information he gathered.

In 1965, the country honored Colonel Kumar with the Padma Shri. The Army honored him with the Distinguished Service Medal. The Siachen Battalion headquarters was renamed ‘Kumar Base’ in honor of Colonel Kumar. He was instrumental in convincing the Indian military and political leadership of the strategic importance of Siachin.
