Britain’s Queen Elizabeth stepped in to sort out an issue over what royals should wear at her husband’s funeral, due to whether Prince Harry and Prince Andrew should wear uniforms military, media reported Thursday.
Prince Philip died at the age of 99 last week and his funeral will be at Windsor Castle on Saturday.
Traditionally, on such formal occasions, members of the royal family wear military uniforms, often reflecting the honorary titles they hold.
However, according to UK newspapers, there has been some behind-the-scenes debate about what Queen Andrew’s son and grandson Harry should wear.
Harry, 36, the Duke of Sussex, stepped down from all royal duties and lost all military patronage in January after moving to Los Angeles with his wife Meghan and son Archie, but wanted to wear the uniform he wore for her wedding.
Andrew, 61, Duke of York, has strayed from official engagements due to his “misjudged” association with the late disgraced American financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Reports reported that he wished to attend the funeral in admiral’s uniform, an honorary rank bestowed on him to mark his 60th birthday, but he deferred until his return to public life.
The problem was compounded by the fact that the two royals were the only ones to have attended active service – Harry in Afghanistan and Andrew in the Falkland Islands conflict in 1982.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the information, but according to the Daily Mail, the 94-year-old Queen has now decided that all members of the Royal Family should wear mourning costumes to avoid embarrassment.
