Probe ordered after families say 3 UP women received rabies vaccines, not Covid vaccine

A government hospital in Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh administered rabies injections instead of Covid-19 vaccines to three elderly women, their families said on Friday. The incident comes days after a distracted auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) twice administered coronavirus vaccines to a woman within minutes at a primary health center (PHC) in Kanpur Dehat district, in the state. The condition of one of the three women is said to have deteriorated. The families complained to the medical director and demanded action against those who allegedly administered the wrong vaccine.

According to reports, the three women – Saroj (70), a resident of the Saravagyan region, and Anarkali (72) and Satyavati (60), both residents of the Railway Mandi region – came to be vaccinated against Covid. -19 at a community health center (CHC) in Kandhla town on Thursday. They were given injections and asked to go home. After a while, Saroj started to feel dizzy and anxious. Her family members took her to a private doctor. The doctor looked at the OPD slip from the community health center and informed the family that she had received a rabies vaccine. Later, the other two women also learned from their OPD cards that they had received rabies vaccines.

Shamli District Magistrate Jasjit Kaur opened an investigation, making the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Additional Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) investigators in the case, and also ordered the recording of victim impact statements . . Strict action will be taken against those responsible based on the investigation’s findings, Kaur said. CMO Dr Sanjay Aggarwal said a full investigation will be carried out into the matter.
