Philip spent four weeks in hospital earlier this year being treated for an infection to undergo heart surgery, but returned to Windsor in early March. The flag at Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s residence in London, was lowered to half a stick after the news of Philip’s death was announced. The Duke of Edinburgh, as he was officially called, had been by his wife’s side throughout his 69-year reign, the longest in British history.
