When it comes to smartphones, Microsoft has no choice place. But the Redmond-based company still brought in a premium dual-screen “ Surface Duo ” phone last year. But that doesn’t seem to stop Microsoft from developing a second iteration of its foldable phone. While reports of the alleged Surface Duo 2 surfaced on the internet two weeks ago, the latest report online now suggests that the phone is slated to launch this fall. While the original Surface Duo was praised for its display and design, users criticized the flawed software and the camera experience. However, the company is reportedly putting “ special emphasis ” on fixing software issues, including the camera app on its upcoming Surface Duo phone. Previous reports have indicated that the new Surface Duo 2 will benefit from a faster chipset, better optics, and 5G support. But the phone’s software should be the main focus.
That aside, the report also suggests that Microsoft add more engineers to the team working on Surface Duo 2, which includes several job openings posted by Microsoft. Additionally, the company seeks to deliver a mobile user experience that brings “ the best of the Microsoft ecosystem to Android, ” something that has failed in the past.
Microsoft is also reportedly contributing to the development of the “ Obscured Regions ” API which “ adds information about regions of the screen that have been obscured by other tasks or the system user interface. ”
“The API will allow the developer to redistribute the experience in the visible regions. For example, a launcher can animate its bottom drawer to the unobscured area to allow the user to launch another application, ”Microsoft said.
In addition to Surface Duo 2, a Surface Laptop 4 and a Surface Pro 8 are also reportedly in development. New Microsoft products are expected to debut in October or November. As a reminder, Microsoft introduced the original Surface Duo in September 2020. The company has reduced the price of its high-end dual-screen phone in some markets this year. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft offers the second iteration at a similar price.
