Maharashtra, which is facing a massive coronavirus outbreak, reported 15,817 cases in one day. This is the highest number of days in the state this year. 56 people have died from the disease in the past 24 hours, the state government said in a statement.

The country’s worst-affected state last month reported 6,000 daily cases of the coronavirus after a three-month lull. In a few days, the daily level of Covid is on the verge of crossing the 16,000 mark.

Maharashtra has the highest number of active cases in the country. As of Friday, the number of active cases stood at 1,10,485 – an increase of more than 4,000 since yesterday.

11,344 patients have been released today, bringing the total recoveries to 21,17,744, or 92.79% of the total reported cases.

Currently, 5,42,693 people are in home quarantine and 4,884 people are in institutional quarantine, the statement said.

The state reported 14,317 coronavirus cases and 57 deaths on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Mumbai today recorded 1,646 coronavirus cases and 4 deaths.

Maharashtra is among six states that have reported more than 85 percent of the country’s total cases. The other five states are: Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

The Center said Thursday “very concerned” about the coronavirus situation in Maharashtra.

Yesterday, the government of Maharashtra announced a weeklong lockdown in Nagpur, one of the worst affected districts. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray later indicated that other districts may also face the lockdown.

The state health department on Wednesday presented a seven-point action plan, including close contact testing, a rapid contact tracing, mass hot spot testing and a death audit.
