Binoy Viswam, leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and MP for Rajya Sabha, criticized the technocrat, saying he spoke volumes about the direction in which the BJP was taking the country.

The images circulated widely on social media and showed voters receiving Sreedharan, washing themselves and touching his feet.

In one photo, a voter was seen kneeling in front of him, while another visual showed women touching his feet.

Asked about the controversy, Sreedharan said the images were clicked on when greeted in the traditional Indian fashion.

Hitting his detractors, the 88-year-old candidate said: “It’s our Indian tradition. What’s wrong? They were showing respect. They didn’t worship me.”

Criticizing Sreedharan, Binoy Viswam alleged that the technocrat “glorified” the act of washing your feet.

“He says it is Indian tradition. It is an example of the direction in which the BJP is taking our country, the political system and democratic values,” he told reporters.

The CPI leader said India viewed Sreedharan as “a torchbearer of modern technology” but changed after entering “BJP and RSS politics prison (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh)” .

Launching his campaign earlier this week, Sreedharan said the BJP was fighting the polls on the development board.

Congressman Shafi Parambil and CPI (M) CP Pramod are his main rivals in the election.
