Even if a person has mild symptoms after a vaccination or tests positive for the coronavirus, the vaccine still does what it’s supposed to do: prevent severe disease progression and death.
All vaccines approved by the European Union (EMA) and United States (FDA) health authorities have shown high efficacy. For example, mRNA vaccines from BioNtech-Pfizer and Moderna achieve about 95% efficacy, while AstraZeneca’s vector vaccine reaches 76%, according to recent data. However, this does mean that it is still possible to get infected after a vaccination. However, if the effectiveness is considered in relation to the severity of the course of the disease, all vaccines work significantly better than without them. In the event of an infection, for example, vaccines usually prevent the type of serious reaction that causes people to be put on a ventilator ”or even kills them.
In Germany, however, there have been cases in which older people in nursing homes still had severe courses of COVID-19 even after vaccination. Some even died. The reason? It takes about two weeks for the body to fully develop immunity. Thus, full protection is not achieved until two weeks after a patient has received their second vaccine vaccine.
But only over time will we learn how long the immunity of COVID vaccines lasts. This is why the period after vaccine licensing is also referred to as phase IV of vaccine development. We are now in the middle of this phase. Reliable statements about the duration of immunity will only be possible after several months, or even years. – DW
