The past year has made us aware of the importance of clean skin care. We are no longer sitting at home, often finding time to Google on how to improve skin using natural ingredients or products that are environmentally friendly and high in results, but low in chemicals. People really want to know what is in their skin care product and how good or bad it is, not only for their skin but also for the environment.
A number of brands are also realizing the importance of being transparent, creating products that attempt to meet the demand of the informed and conscious shopper. The Switch Fix is one of those labels. The personal care brand recently partnered with retail coffee roaster chain Blue Tokai to reuse coffee production waste in personal care products. It’s an interesting idea: over the years, coffee has become a finite resource. Global estimates show that 23 million tonnes of coffee are wasted each year. In addition, water scarcity and erratic weather conditions threaten the yield of coffee plantations.
We decided to give the Daily Grind body scrub a try (100g, ₹609) from their new range. The scrub label says it is vegan, water-saving, non-toxic, non-polluting, cruelty-free, and plastic-free, and combines reused coffee granules, apricot oil, and ground cocoa butter . It promises to offer 25 to 30 apps and a 12 month shelf life.

The glass bottle makes for an attractive look, especially in a market flooded with plastic packaging, and saves you having to squeeze the last drop out of a tube (the most preferred choice of container for body scrubs). The scrub itself is quite smooth and the skin is hydrated after application. The problem is, if you use the scrub in winters (I started using it towards the end of February) it is difficult to remove resulting in waste. It becomes too dry to even apply.
Verdict: If you’re a coffee lover like me, this might be your favorite scrub, but the sweet aroma can be a little too overwhelming at times and winters aren’t the most ideal time to use it.
