Trivedi also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his handling of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
He had announced his resignation during a speech in the Upper House. Trivedi was the president of the Hindi cell in Trinamool and was inducted into the Rajya Sabha after losing the 2019 election of Lok Sabha of the Barrackpore constituency of West Bengal to Arjun Singh of the BJP.
Upon resigning, Trivedi had said he felt “choked” and added that “there is nothing we can do about violence in the state”.
Criticizing Trivedi’s decision to quit the party and join the BJP, TMC MP Sougata Roy said, “People like Dinesh Trivedi hold office while in office and quit a party at election time.”
TMC spokesman Kunal Ghosh also called Trivedi “ungrateful” and accused him of betraying the people of the state.
