Johannesburg: Former South African President Jacob Zuma sentenced to 15 months in prison The action is for non-compliance with a court order to co-operate with the Commission of Inquiry in a corruption case during his presidency. The decision rests with the Constitutional Court. Judge CC Khampepe ruled that Zuma’s action was intolerable and bizarre.
The court said the sentence should be served immediately. The court ruled that Zuma was trying to provoke public sympathy to escape punishment and that this was an insult to constitutional principles.
Earlier, the commission found Zuma guilty and sentenced him to two years in prison. But Zuma reiterated that he would rather go to jail than cooperate with the commission. Zuma lost power in 2018 following allegations of corruption.
