Now, former India selector Sarandeep Singh has revealed why Dhoni did not get a retirement match. ‘Dhoni could not retire due to postponement of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Soon after deciding to postpone this, Dhoni announced his retirement. There was also the Kovid expansion. If the World Cup had been held last year, Dhoni would have definitely got involved and got a retirement match, ”said Sarandeep Singh.
The 2020 IPL was held in the UAE. CSK had a camp in Chennai ahead of the tournament. Dhoni has announced his retirement from international cricket after completing his first training here. Along with Dhoni, Suresh Raina had announced his retirement that day. Dhoni’s retirement comes amid ongoing discussions over whether he will be included in the T20 World Cup in Australia.
Though the BCCI had planned to hold a match just for Dhoni to retire, it did not materialize due to the expansion of Kovid. In 2020, Dhoni disappointed with CSKA and CSK was eliminated from the play-offs for the first time in its history. Dhoni will continue to captain CSK in the 2021 season. The second quarter of the 2021 season IPL is yet to take place. With this, Dhoni is likely to announce his retirement.
