New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi has termed the emergency declared by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government as a “big mistake”. The then Prime Minister and Rahul’s grandmother Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency for 21 months from 1975 to 1977.

It was a big mistake for the Congress party to impose a state of emergency. But Rahul said on Tuesday that the party “never tried to capture the constitutional framework of India”.

Rahul made the revelation in an interview with Kaushik Basu at an event at Cornell University. This conversation takes place about 10 minutes and 20 seconds after the start of the discussion.

While acknowledging the mistakes of his predecessors, Rahul was ready to criticize the current government. He said what is happening in India at present is fundamentally different from an emergency. He accused the RSS of trying to seize independent institutions.

In his words,

“I think it (Emergency) is a mistake. Of course it is a mistake. There is a fundamental difference between what happened in the emergency and what went wrong and what is happening now. The Congress party has never tried to capture India. The constitutional framework, our design does not allow us. Said.

Earlier, Rahul had denied the allegations. One such move comes during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In an interview, he openly admitted that the emergency was a mistake. During a rally in Maharashtra in 1978, Indira Gandhi herself apologized to the people on the issue of emergency. The Congress party itself tweeted this.
