MUMBAI: leader of BJP Devendra Fadnavis Wednesday claimed that when he was Chief Minister of Maharashtra, President of Shiv Sena Uddhav Thackeray had called him in 2018 to request the reinstatement of the then suspended policeman Sachin Waze in the state police.
He also accused the Shiv Sena of pressuring him on this request at the time.
Mumbai policeman Waze is at the center of a National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation into the case related to the recovery of an SUV with explosives from an industrialist Mukesh Ambanihome in South Mumbai on February 25.
Waze, arrested in the case on March 13 for his alleged role in the crime, was until recently attached to the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of the criminal branch of the municipal police.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Fadnavis said: “I was Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 2018 and also headed the Interior Ministry. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray called me to reinstate then suspended policeman Sachin Waze in the police force. Some Shiv Sena ministers later met with me with the same request. ”
“When I received the proposal to reinstate Waze in the police force, I verbally sought the advice of the Attorney General on this matter. I was told that Waze had been suspended after the High Court order. from Bombay, so I decided not to reinstate him, ”Fadnavis said.
The opposition leader in the state legislature also alleged that the Shiv Sena even tried to pressure him.
The BJP and the Shiv Sena shared power between 2014 and 2019. However, after the 2019 Assembly polls, the Sena split from the BJP to share the post of chief minister and partnered with the NCP. and in Congress. Uddhav Thackeray heads the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) tripartite government in the state.
