Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bronzeville to close after over 100 years

Chicago: Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bronxville is closing. The hundred-year-old church has deeply touched the lives of tens of thousands.

A church is not a building. There is the mind of the worshiper. Says Katie Williams Hall, who has been worshiping at this church for seventy-three years. While it is true that we regularly close this church, most of those who come together in such a large building are adults. They do not have the financial means to do this. However, four churches, including this one in the area, have opened a new place of worship. The name given to the new church is ‘Our Lady of Africa’. Church historian Larry Cope said worshipers at the four churches on Corpus Christi South Side will experience the joy of unity here.

The church is a credit union during the Pandemic period.

It is unfortunate that the church that witnessed the baptisms, first Masses and weddings of so many people had to close but everyone in the black community said with one voice that they were happy to be able to worship and build another Catholic church together.
