India has recorded 1,26,789 new cases of Covid, setting another grim one-day record as the county battles the second wave of infections. 685 deaths in the last 24 hours brought the total number of deaths to 1.66,862.

In parts of Maharashtra, the worst affected state in the country, vaccination was halted last night, apparently because doses were not available. Satara and Panvel are among the districts that have halted vaccinations. Pune has closed more than 100 vaccination centers due to the shortage, tweeted Supriya Sule, a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan told NDTV that “there is no shortage” of vaccines. “There is no shortage of vaccines. States receive vaccines according to their needs and stocks are constantly replenished,” said Dr Vardhan.

A nighttime curfew has been imposed in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Prayagraj due to the growing number of Covid cases in the country’s most populous state. Uttar Pradesh has registered 6,002 new cases, pushing its total caseload to 6.45 lakh.

The Punjab also declared a series of restrictions, including a statewide nighttime curfew, up from the previous 12 districts. The state has registered 2,963 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the number of infections to over 2.6 lakh.
