All eyes this time around are on MS Dhoni, led by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After a disappointing IPL 2020, can Dhoni make an excellent comeback in IPL 2021 and win his fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) title. CSK begin their IPL campaign against the Delhi Capitals on Saturday with hopes that this time around they will secure their XI combination.

CSK playing XI against DC in IPL 2021: CSK looks significantly more stable compared to the previous year, with the return of Suresh Raina and the addition of a few players at auction. However, it also put them in a dead end situation. Chennai’s biggest headache during CSK vs DC game on April 10 would be what theirs will be “Straight opening combination”.

IPL 2021: Who will be the first pair for the CSK vs DC game?

Chennai would be a happy side as they boast a plethora of opening batsmen. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Robin Uthappa and Faf du Plessis are fighting for the top spots of the pair in Chennai playing XI.

Until last year, Shane Watson CSK was the opening mainstay, as his partner kept changing, causing a lot of instability in the first order. The regular changes made it difficult for the forerunners to settle into their roles. As a result, CSK’s intermediate order was exposed too early.

So Dhoni and the team’s management will have to pick the right combination to avoid the IPL 2020 debacle.

IPL 2021: but what are the options?

Option 1: Ruturaj Gaikwad

Gaikwad made his debut on the IPL roller coaster. From the positive test for Covid-19 to the dismissal for a duck during his debut, through three consecutive fifties in the last three matches of the season, the young born in Pune had seen it all. Interestingly, its successive historical half-centuries have come as an opening. Therefore, he will likely be half of CSK’s opening pair.

Option 2: Faf du Plessis

Faf was arguably the best batsman in CSK last year. The only consistent player in the yellow jersey, he amassed 449 points, his highest 87 points being in the opening. However, it was at No. 3 that the Proteas marched well. In the three starting games, he scored 173 impressive points including two half centuries.

Option 3: Robin Uthappa

It was this new signing from Chennai this year that actually spiced up the competition. Uthappa for most of his career IPL played as an opener and would like to return to his preferred position. His best as a No.1 came in 2014, where he scored 660 points to help Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win the IPL title.

CSK will most likely choose the Uthappa-Gaikwad opening combination, with Faf taking third place
