New Delhi [India], February 26 (ANI): Based on the initial idea of hosting the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in a city, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring the possibility of playing the league over four to five cities. Although the logistical part needs further discussion, the idea was pitched and is being discussed by senior council officials.
Speaking to ANI, a BCCI official familiar with the developments said the idea had indeed been discussed and although it is still in its early stages, the 14th edition of the league could well be played in more than one city if things go as planned.
“We are exploring the possibility of taking the IPL to more locations than originally planned. The intention is to bring it to more fans as the situation moves towards normalcy. The feasibility of the bio-secure bubble and the Logistics will of course be crucial to finally determine the venues. It’s a fluid situation and the health of the participants is our main concern, “said the official.
Some of the cities that have been discussed are Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad, among others.
While the tournament is still a long way off, franchises are also open to having the league in more than one city, as this will help stay flexible in keeping an eye on the COVID-19 situation.
“You see, there is still time for the league to start, but we are more than keen to play the league in a few cities. The concern of welcoming it to a city is that the COVID-19 situation is constantly changing. , if by any chance one of the chosen cities sees a situation where it becomes difficult to host the games, another city can go ahead and, from a logistical point of view, it will be easier for the council of ‘administration and franchises,’ said an IPL franchise manager.
While BCCI is keen to deliver the most successful national league to as many fans as possible, the board is also clear that the bio-bubble restrictions will be taken with player safety in mind, as was the case when the tournament was moved. in the UAE in 2020.
“With multiple cities there will obviously be individual bubbles. While we want fans from different cities to enjoy the games, the safety of the players and those involved in the league will be a priority,” said the BCCI official. . (ANI)
