23% of vaccines wasted by states through April 11, most in Tamil Nadu: RTI

New Delhi:

23% of the total number of Covid vaccine doses used in states through April 11 has been wasted, the answer to a question from RTI revealed. The maximum amount of wastage has been reported in Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Punjab, Manipur and Telangana.

The RTI response revealed that a total of 44.78 lakh vaccine doses were wasted out of the 10.34 crore dose used by states through April 11.

No wastage of doses was reported in Kerala, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Goa, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

Details emerged a day after the government stepped up the vaccination campaign and announced that all people over the age of 18 would be eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19 from May 1 and decided to return open and flexible vaccine pricing, purchase, eligibility and administration.

The significant move came as India – gripped by the second wave of the pandemic – battles its worst public health crisis.
